Elihu Burritt Library Undergraduate Research Awards

2010 Application Guidelines and Student Application Form

Elihu Burritt Library is pleased to announce the 2010 Undergraduate Library Research award. This award will recognize excellence in undergraduate research papers/projects as well as skill and creativity in the application of library services, resources and collections. Two prizes of $350 will be awarded during the spring 2010 semester at the Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day (URCAD). One prize will be award to a senior thesis and the other will be awarded to a paper/project from any class/year if applicable.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE LIBRARY RESEARCH AWARD IS A SEPARATE PRIZE FROM THE OTHERS PRESENTED AT URCAD.  For more information about URCAD, please go to http://www.ccsu.edu/urcad/

Eligibility:

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Be enrolled during the spring 2010 semester as a Central Connecticut State University undergraduate at any class level or discipline/major.
  • Have completed their research paper or project for a credit course during the spring, summer, or fall semesters in 2009.
  • Agree that the paper or project and application materials will become property of Elihu Burritt Library and may be publicly displayed in the library and/or library website.

Evaluation Criteria:

Research papers/projects will be judged on how well the following are demonstrated:

  • Unusual depth or breadth in the use of Burritt Library resources and collections.
  • Use of a broad array of information sources (may include print, online journal articles from databases, Web, primary sources, etc.).
  • Information sources are appropriate to the context of the project.
  • Print and electronic sources must be properly and fully cited in a Bibliography/Works Cited using discipline-appropriate bibliographic style guide.
  • Writing (including essay - see below) has clarity, coherent organization and is grammatically correct.

Application Procedure/Checklist:

Applications must include all of the following to be considered for the award:

  • Application form (below), which includes a brief summary of your research paper/project.
  • Faculty nomination form. (Requires BlueChip ID no. / CONSULS PIN for access and submission).
  • A 500 -750 word essay describing research strategies and application of library tools and resources (research databases, online catalogs, books, etc.) used in completion of the project. You can include information such as search strategies, what made a source valuable or less useful, etc.
  • An electronic copy of the final version of the research paper/project.
  • An electronic copy of the bibliography or source list.

Application deadline is February 2010. Essay, paper/project, and bibliography should be sent as Microsoft Word, RTF or PDF.
