Architect's rendering of the library renovationFor me, the ideal library space would be one where there could be moderate socialization in a larger space, and snacks. There are many areas that one has to be quiet in a library, the quiet floor for example or in the stacks at individual desks. While the main floor of our library has a more social aspect, it is often distracting with the alarm at the exit going off or people coming in through the turn gate. I feel like there could be a space upstairs that has a more coffeehouse type atmosphere. Areas for lounging with big couches and chairs that could also be used for group work, a small coffee and snack center, some computers for research or browsing, and some typical library resources such as magazines, newspapers, etc. We all know the library is for research, but students sometimes need a place to relax, socialize, or do group work where they don't feel intimidated by the lack of or excessive noise. Some would say that is what the student center is for. However, for anyone who has been in the student center on campus, it is always bustling and always noisy. Personally, I would rather come to the library and have a relaxed atmosphere to enjoy while I study or socialize. Obviously, there needs to be some sort of "policing" so things do not get out of control, so a librarian would probably be needed to monitor the area during the busiest times. But let's face it, people who are going to get out of control probably won't be coming to the library as their first choice to do so. As a graduate student who needs a bit more of a space to relax but also a place to do group work and discussions with classmates, and the occasional coffee, I think it would be beneficial for the library to provide that kind of space for the CCSU community.

Architect's rendering of the library renovation
My Dream Library would be colorful (neon colors in the entrance) and display artwork from our students. Large circles, and squares painted in different colors and perhaps geometric shapes hanging from the ceiling as well. It would have comfy couches and decorations that are welcoming. It would have bar stools and small tables for just a few people getting together to meet. I like the current coffee area, but for some reason the location is not great; it needs to be off to the side to be more inviting to sit and chat with a friend. I would like a display of fiction books that are the staff picks along with rotating displays highlighting each department on campus and promoting their programs. I would of course love to see an area where friends could gather and chat much like the student center. A meeting place to work on their group projects. It would be great to have an area where we could work together and not worry about keeping quiet. My ultimate idea would be to have a breakout area where one could go to stretch and relax. Perhaps more along the lines of a Zen room with an indoor water fountain, and aroma therapy. A Lego room might be good as well. We all need a place to play. I’m actually thinking of Andy Warhol and his pillow room. Would love to kick a pillow or two around and just act goofy.
