Started in 1957 and continued until 1966 by Ewa Gierat KULIG, (initially called ZIEMIANSKA) was conceived as a substitute to conversation with friends, and was a unique scrap-book consisting of letters, clippings, manuscripts, and photos that were circulating among a group of Polish immigrants that settled in the United States and in Canada after World War II. Sometimes letters received by KULIG's regular contributors from their friends and relatives were included. The letters came from Poland, England, France, Brazil, Italy. Among the correspondents were well known writers, editors, scholars, etc. In their exchanges contributors to KULIG discussed various topics. Polish emigre politics, "Polishness", Polish scouting, literature, religion, philosophy, and immigration were among those that appeared most often. In addition to exchange of personal news they commented on current events, controversial issues of the time, and discussed articles and books. The majority of the materials included are in Polish, many letters and clippings are in English, and some in French. At least half of the correspondence is handwritten. All scrapbooks are in a very fragile state - adhesive tape used to attach letters and clippings dried out and most of materials got loose. Over the years some original correspondents dropped out and new ones were introduced to the circle. Some of them contributed more or less regularly to Kulig, like Danuta Mostwin, Felicja Ozarowska, Helena Fedorowicz, Zofia Wankowicz, Zofia Kaczorowska, and Danuta Podkomorska. Others wrote letters ocassionally or were just passive readers. Several important groups of letters could be distinguished. One is Ewa Gierat's correspondence with her father Zygmunt Karpinski. Many of his letters include several sentences added by Ciotka Grzmotka [Wanda Hulewicz], the sister with whom he shared an apartment in Warsaw. Zygmunt Karpinski's letters were often addressed to both his daughters, Ewa Gierat and Wanda Mycielska in Brasil. Another group is a series of letters Ewa Gierat exchanged with various Benedictine nuns from the Regina Laudis Abbey in Bethlehem, Connecticut. Correspondence with Regina Laudis affiliate [?] Eleanor Flexner could also be included in this group. Yet another significant group of letters is Ewa Gierat's correspondence with a progressive catholic milieu in Cracow connected with publishing house Znak and weekly Tygodnik Powszechny. This circle included Anna Morawska, Jacek Wozniakowski, Andrzej Bardecki, Marek Skwarnicki, Krzysztof Kozlowski, Tadeusz Zychiewicz, and Jerzy Turowicz. Ewa Gierat wrote a number of articles and essays for the above mentioned Tygodnik Powszechny as well as for several Polish emigre periodicals. She often sent letters to the editors with comments about published articles or their publishing practices. Thus letters to and from people like Jerzy Giedroyc, Zofia Hertz, Stanislaw Grocholski, Wojciech Dluzewski, Florian Smieja, and Mieczyslaw Grydzewski can be find in Kuligs. Both Ewa Gierat and Danuta Mostwin frequently used friends from Kulig circle as first readers and critics of their manuscripts. In almost all Kuligs appeared letters, both private and official, concernig Polish scout organization in exile, girl scouts in particular. Irena Lukomska, Jadwiga Chrusciel, Janina Dagys, Irena Kubik, Zdzislaw Peszkowski in the USA, and Helena Grazynska, Elzbieta Andrzejowska, Zygmunt Szadkowski, Jan Prokop in England were among those involved in exchange of opinions on this subject. Occasionally Ewa Gierat inserted letters, articles, announcements and texts of speeches pertaining to the Polish veterans' organization SPK, of which Stanislaw Gierat was a founder and long-term president. Since Ewa Gierat considered Kulig to be a sort of her personal diary she also included clippings, memos and letters related to her work at McGraw Hill Co.
