One Book One Community 2013 alt

One Book logoThe One Book One Community program was initiated last year to promote literacy by bringing people together to read and discuss one book within one community.  It grew out of a collaboration between  the Elihu Burritt Library, the Central Forum for Contemplative Practices, CCSU and Capital Community College.  Last year we discussed the latest book by His Holiness the Dalai Lama in connection with his visit to Western Connecticut State University. It was a very successful program which brought dozens of students, faculty and people from the community together.

We would like to continue this project in 2013 with the book Almost Home, Helping Kids Move from Homelessness to Hope, by Kevin Ryan and Tina Kelley, with introduction of Corey Booker, Mayor of Newark. The book tells the stories of six extraordinary young people who, despite almost unimaginable suffering and adversity, exceeded almost everyone’s expectations.
