Elihu Burritt Library Research Award Application for Central Connecticut State University Students

2024 Application Guidelines / Student Application Form

The Elihu Burritt Library's Student Research Awards recognize excellence in CCSU undergraduate and graduate research papers/projects as well as skill and creativity in the application of library services, resources and collections. Two prizes of $350 will be awarded, one to an undergraduate student and the other to a graduate student during the 2024 spring semester at the University Research and Creative Achievement Day (URCAD).

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE STUDENT LIBRARY RESEARCH AWARD IS A SEPARATE PRIZE FROM THE OTHERS PRESENTED AT THE UNIVERSITY RESEARCH AND CREATIVE ACHIEVEMENT DAY (URCAD).  For more information about URCAD, please go to http://www.ccsu.edu/urcad/

Eligibility:

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Be enrolled during the spring 2024 semester as a Central Connecticut State University student at any class level or discipline/major.
  • Have completed their research paper or project for a credit course during the spring, summer, or fall semesters in 2023.
  • Agree that the paper or project and application materials will be publicly displayed in the library catalog or library website.

Evaluation Criteria:

Research papers/projects will be judged on how well the following are demonstrated:

  • Please refer to the NEW rubric for judging criteria.
  • Unusual depth or breadth in the use of Burritt Library resources and collections.
  • Use of a broad array of information sources (may include print, online journal articles from databases, Web, primary sources, etc.).
  • Information sources are appropriate to the context of the project.
  • Print and electronic sources must be properly and fully cited in a Bibliography/Works Cited using discipline-appropriate bibliographic style guide.
  • Writing (including essay - see below) has clarity, coherent organization and is grammatically correct.

Application Procedure/Checklist:

Applications must include all of the following to be considered for the award:

  • Application form (will be included below), which includes a brief summary of your research paper/project. (* This is not the essay below.)
  • A 500 - 750 word essay describing research strategies and application of library tools and resources (research databases, online catalogs, books, etc.) used in completion of the project. You can include information such as search strategies, what made a source valuable or less useful, etc. This essay is separate from the application form.
  • An electronic copy of the final version of the research paper/project.
  • An electronic copy of the bibliography or source list.
