One Book One Community 2013

One Book logoThe One Book One Community program promotes literacy by bringing people together to read and discuss one book within one community. This program became very popular nationwide in recent years and is supported by the American Library Association. It was initiated at Central Connecticut State University in 2012. This year we would like to continue this project with the book

Almost Home, Helping Kids Move from Homelessness to Hope

by Kevin Ryan and Tina Kelley, with an introduction by Cory Booker, Mayor of Newark. We decided to select this book for several reasons:

  • The problem of homelessness runs deep within many communities in Connecticut, including New Britain where we have nearly 350 homeless children (according to information in the Central Courier).
  • The topic will be in sync with this year’s University-Museum-Community collaborative: “A Home of One’s Own: A Project to Support New Britain’s Workplan to End Homelessness.”
  • To help create awareness that people in our own community (students, veterans and the elderly) are directly affected by homelessness and the threat of being homeless.

Sandwich Making Service Project!

As a result of reading of the book Almost Home several service projects are underway.  One of the projects is called CCSU Sandwich Hero.  The program requires several students to help to make sandwiches for the South Park Inn emergency shelter where for about 120 homeless, including women and children,  find shelter.

Every 4th Tuesday of each month sandwiches are being prepared in the Newman House.

On Tuesday October 22 a group of students from Lambda Theta Phi made the first batch.
