Frederic & Howard's Car Collection

Other than a love of music and theatre, the two men also bonded over their love of cars. Before Frederic met Howard, in his travels overseas, he met many of his friends because of their love of cars. Even when he returned home he still kept in touch with many of them over the years, receiving letters with photos or postcards of cars. Once Howard moved in, their love of cars turned into a collection, which continued to grow over the years. These cars were not just famous locally, but nationally as well. The one-of-a-kind 1937 Rolls Royce Phantom III was featured in Motor Trend magazine as well as Playboy in the 1950s.

Gas Mileage Ration Ticket.jpg

Ration Tickets: This is a gas ration ticket from World War II. These coupons were used to ration the amount of gas one person could purchase at one time. There were also ration coupons for every day products, including meats, sugar, and canned goods. This was done to allow as many supplies as possible to go directly to benefit the military overseas. Even having gas rations during the war didn’t stop Frederic from taking his cars out for a spin. Since he was one of the few people in his friend group with a car, he would often pick people up and bring them wherever they had to go, specifically to the store or to a doctor’s appointment.

After Frederic passed away, Howard continued their love of cars and kept the collection going well into the end stages of his own life. Later in life he owned a 1964 Buick Rivera, a 1967 Mercedes Benz 250 SL Coupe, a 1967 Cadillac 69347, a 1978 Cadillac Seville and 1978 El Dorado, and a Volkwagen Karmann Ghia. It was in that Karmann Ghia where Howard was killed at the age of 85 in a tragic car accident.
