Veterand Day Parade Cartoon- 2009

Sometimes it is easy to forget why we celebrate Veterans Day. In this cartoon the father is trying to explain what Veterans Day is the young girl, who is having a hard time understanding the concept. One could argue that the celebration stemmed from the first Armistice Day in 1918 when WWI had finally ended and the War was won. On that day parades erupted and everyone celebrated. Through out the years there has been some somber moments and even resentment, but in general it is still a celebration, a celebration to honor our veterans who have given our great nation their freedom.

As much as it is a celebration Veterans Day is also legally recognized as a holiday to commemorate veterans, and along with the celebrations come memorial services to pay tribute to those who have fought and died. Veterans day differs from Memorial Day, which only commemorates the sacrifice of service men. In contrast Veterans Day recognizes all veterans who have sacrificed and are still living.

Today, Hartford honors our Veterans with a parade every year. In 2016 the Veterans Day Parade had about 80 participants including local organization, veteran groups and bands. Committees dedicate their time to executive, management and planning of the parade in order to commemorate all of America's Veterans.
