NOTE: These directions ONLY pertain to CCSU items that are books, CDs, and DVDs.
Please do NOT sensitize or desensitize CCSU magnetic items, specifically VHS (videocassettes) and audiotape (audio cassettes).
In addition, please do NOT sensitize or desensitize ECSU, SCSU, WCSU, Community College, State Library, or ILL items.
To DESENSITIZE an item, perform the following:
1. Make sure that the orange light is under the picture of the books, DVDs, and CDs on the left side of the machine. You can adjust the setting by pressing the button in between the two pictures.
2. Then, make sure the orange light is under the book with an arrow pointing out the door and the green arrow is facing to the right. Again, you can adjust the settings by pressing on the corresponding buttons.
3. If it’s a book, place the spine of the item directly on the machine and pass it through. If the item is a CD or DVD, place the material upside down so the metal sensitizers on the item are facing downward.
4. After passing the item through, you’ll hear a thump and there will be no steady green light on the check mark in the center of the machine. The item has been desensitized. However, some items will not desensitize due to the type or age of the security strip. After passing these types of items through, a steady green light will show on the check mark instead.
5. Pass all items around the gate since not all of them may desensitize.
To RESENSITIZE an item, do the following:
1. Make sure that the orange light is under the picture of the books, DVDs, and CDs on the left side of the machine. You can adjust the setting by pressing the button in between the two pictures.
2. Then, make sure the orange light is under the book with an arrow showing that the item is going back on the shelves. The green arrow should still be facing right. Again, you can adjust the settings by pressing on the corresponding buttons.
3. If it’s a book, place the spine of the item directly on the machine and pass it through. If the item is a CD or DVD, place the material upside down so the metal sensitizers on the item are facing downward.
4. After passing the item through, you’ll hear a thump. The item has been resensitized.
5. Place the item on the “Checked-in and Re-sensitized” cart near the Circulation Desk.
